Understanding the Desktop Font License for Your Creative Projects
When you purchase a desktop font from a type foundry, you're investing in a tool that can elevate your designs. However, it's essential to understand the terms of use to ensure you use the font correctly and within the scope of the license. Below information will clarify exactly how you may use the font for one brand and up to 5000 end products. If you need broader rights, we’ve pointed you to our Extended Commercial License at the end.
What is a Desktop Font License?
A Desktop/Commercial Font License grants you the right to install and use a Yenty Jap font on one (1) computer for one (1) brand (legal entity). It is a non-exclusive, non-transferable license designed for traditional design workflows—print and static digital design—while protecting the designer’s intellectual property.
Permitted Uses (Up to 5000 End Products, One Brand)
Under a standard desktop license, you can:
1) Install on One (1) Computer
- Use the font on exactly one workstation or device under your control.
- This device must be dedicated to a single brand (legal entity).
2) Create Up to 5000 Total End Products
- An “end product” is any final, rasterized or outlined design in which the font appears. Examples include:
- Printed Items: Posters, business cards, brochures, T-shirts, stationery, packaging, promotional merchandise.
- Digital Outputs: E-books/PDF downloads, digital invitations, social-media graphics, static digital ads, website mockups (screenshots only).
- You may sell or distribute up to 5000 copies/units in any combination of these printed or digital formats.
3) Use in Static Social-Media & Marketing Graphics
- You can create an unlimited number of social-media posts, banners, and static ads featuring the font for that same brand, provided the total end-product count does not exceed 5000.
- Any animated or interactive use (for example, in a video or GIF) is considered a “motion” or “broadcast” scenario—see Restrictions below.
4) Design Internal Brand Collateral
- Use the font in mood boards, mockups, internal presentations, and proofs—again, as long as your final output stays within the 5000-end-product limit.
Restrictions to Keep in Mind
To respect the designer’s rights and ensure fair usage, this Desktop/Commercial license DOES NOT cover the following:
1) Embedding Prohibited
- No App/Game Embedding: If you wish to embed this font in a mobile or desktop application (even a free app), you must purchase an App License.
- No Website Embedding: To embed the font on a live website (.WOFF/.WOFF2 or similar), purchase the appropriate Webfont License.
- No Server-Side (SaaS) Rendering: Dynamically generating PDFs, images, or design files for multiple end users (e.g., a “logo generator” or PDF invoicing system) requires a Server License.
- No Broadcast/TV/Film/Streaming: Any on-screen motion project (TV show, film, podcast video, YouTube series) requires a Broadcast License.
2) No Raw-File Resale or Redistribution
- You may not re-sell, re-distribute, or give away the raw .OTF/.TTF/.WOFF/.WOFF2 files to anyone else—online or offline.
- Embedding this font in a template or kit (e.g., on marketplaces like Canva, Corjl, Creative Market) is prohibited.
3) No Editable Formats
- All “end products” must be delivered in a finalized, non-editable form (rasterized or outlined). Recipients or customers may not edit the font outlines or modify the glyphs.
4) No Modification of the Font Files
- Altering the font’s design—changing glyph outlines, modifying kerning classes, adding or removing characters—is strictly prohibited.
5) Single-Brand License Only
- This license is valid only for one legal entity (one brand). If your company has multiple brands or sub-brands, each must purchase its own Desktop/Commercial license.
6) No Usage Beyond 5 000 End Products
- Once you exceed a total of 5 000 printed or digital items (combined), you must upgrade to our Extended Commercial License.
What Happens If You Need More Than 5000 End Products or Logo Rights?
If your project grows beyond 5000 final items—or if you need to convert the font into a logo or trademark for your brand—please upgrade to:
Extended Commercial License, which allow you to:
• Install on one (1) computer for one (1) brand.
• Create up to 50 000 total end products (print or digital).
• Unlimited logo/trademark usage for that brand.
• Unlimited social-media & marketing collateral (static) for that brand.
• Still not allowed: Webfont embedding, app embedding, server rendering, broadcast use. Those require their own specialized licenses.
Ownership and Intellectual Property
- The font remains the exclusive intellectual property of Yenty Jap (Yenty Jap Creative).
- Purchasing a Desktop/Commercial license grants you usage rights, not ownership.
- You may not transfer, sub-license, or sell your license to another party.
Warranty and Liability
- Fonts are provided “as is”, without any warranties—express or implied.
- Yenty Jap is not liable for any damages, losses, or disputes arising from misuse or unauthorized distribution of the font.
- It is the licensee’s responsibility to ensure all usage remains within the terms outlined above.
Termination of License
- This license automatically terminates if you violate any of the terms above (for example, exceeding the 5000 end-product cap without upgrading).
- Upon termination, you must immediately remove all copies of the font from your device(s) and cease all usage.
Governing Law
- This license agreement is governed by and interpreted under the laws of Australia.
- Any dispute arising from this license must be resolved in a court located within Australia, unless both parties agree otherwise in writing.
